Back pad:

The back pad is the upholstered cover for the chair back. The back pad helps to soften the roller massage. It is often thick on the side and may have a cutout which is thinner for a back massage. The back pad is usually made of durable materials to withstand the wear from the rollers going up and down.

Frame:

There are different types of frame construction. Some massage chairs are on a pedestal or swivel base. Other massage chairs are on a steel square frame. A steel square frame offers greater stability and strength than a pedestal or swivel base frame. Frames are rated for certain weights of users. Make sure you know the maximum weight for a given massage chair model.

Motors:

Motors are used in a massage chair is to enable different mechanical features of the recliner. Typically, motors are used for the mechanical rollers. Most massage chairs have an individual motor for the kneading, percussion and rolling massages. This type of design requires three motors. If the recliner has power recline of the chair back or leg rest, then it has a motor. If the leg rest and chair back work independently, then each has their own individual motor.

Maximum Weight Limits:

Massage chairs are rated with different maximum weight limits of users. It is important to check the weight limit of a particular model to make sure it is appropriate for the intended users.

Recline Angle:

The angle of recline refers to the chair back. Massage chairs made reclined back from almmost 90° to 175°. Keep in mind that a completely flat or horizontal position would be 180°. By changing the angle of recline, you can change the level of pressure of the massage.

Roller Mechanism:

A roller mechanism is used to massage the back, neck and shoulders. The roller mechanism is typically able to perform kneading and percussion. More sophisticated roller mechanism can perform a combination of kneading and rolling as well. Some roller mechanisms have pressure sensitive heads which conform to the curvature of your spine.

Size:

The size of a massage chair is an important consideration. You should know what the width, length and height of the massage chair. Also, it is important to know what the overall length is when the chair is fully reclined and the leg rest is fully extended. This will give you an idea of the total length required and where you may want to place your recliner.

Weight of Chair:

Most massage chairs are equipped with wheels for transporting at short distances. However, it is important to note the weight of the massage chair.  Most massage chairs may require two people to move. If you have to move it up or down stairs then you'll want to know its weight and size to make sure it fits.

Upholstery:

Most massage chairs are made with either leather or synthetic leather. Traditional leather requires more care but has a great texture and feel. Traditional leather may not hold up to massage chairs with heat. Heat tends to chaff leather and to wear it down quickly. You can now find synthetic leather is of very high quality. They are easy to maintain and have very soft feels. The synthetic leather can be used with heating elements and is very durable with low maintenance.
